violoncello da spalla + loop pedal

Metamorphic (after Bach)

13th January 2022

‘that things change is irrefutable, but how things change, well… that depends on who we are and how we move’

The piece is all about change, how we change, what in us is longing for the horizon in this way or that. It is unsurprising then that I wrote metamorphic fairly soon after leaving university. Metamorphic was birthed thanks to a friend inviting me to some online composition sessions with the Hong Kong Baptist University. I heard Sergey Malov give a wonderful talk about his instrument and was inspired, that day I sketched some of the core ideas to my piece, particular the fundamental concept and theme. The concept of the piece is simple: a series of variations (a variation of a theme by Bach) which are connected through improvisation. The piece never turns out quite the same way twice. There is an emphasis on the five strings on the violoncello da spalla and it’s unique colours.

There are currently no recordings available of this piece, but i am hoping there will be one soon. The score may be purchased by clicking on it. Please inform me if you intend to performance, I would love to work with you on it!
